As the train rolls on, life starts to get back to some normality
Hey guys and girls,
how's it going?
Well, it is a Saturday afternoon... no football and no Mudbash!
If you remember back to my blog on Monday I highlighted how I would be going to this annual camp.
Unfortunately after the events of Tuesday I decided not to go. I may be needed up here to report on the aftermath of the accident.
Thank you to those who tried to contact me throughout the week, it is events like these which show that people care.
One of the pictures I took on Tuesday made the front page of the newspaper in Swan Hill, and a few other pics were in there as well.
For all of my friends in Sydney, find yourself a copy of Thursday's Daily Telegraph and look at page 5. The picture of the couple who assisted with the rescue was one I took... and the only one taken of them.
I was back out at the scene on Friday for the clean-up. When I was there V/Line let the media walk up to the most damaged carriage and take pics.
It actually gave me a sense of closure to be that close to the scene... no other journo who lives in the Kerang/Bendigo/Swan Hill area has spent as long at the site or been so close to the truck and carriages as I have.
I also watched how other journos from Melbourne act:
- would you believe most of them smoke;
- Terry Brown (Herald-Sun feature writer) dresses like a 30-year-old, despite being 50;
- Nick Etchels from 7 News kills his time playing baseball with a microphone boom;
- The Melbourne "vultures" do not like country accommodation, "shoddy" soap and all; and finally
- There are some good Melbourne journo around (thanks John Ferguson and Chris from The Age).
Honestly, this is an experience I will never forget. It has taught me one thing: local people appreciate you as a journalist, and you can be patient to get what you want.
Oh yeah... Port plays Carlton tonight. This should be a good game. We get Michael Wilson and Dean Brogan back, but it will be a tough encounter.
Port will win by 18 points.
Until later
See ya
